The Origin Story: Why 3mpwrApp Was Built

3mpwrApp did not begin as a product idea. It began as a response to a crisis. A community member — navigating a workplace injury claim, fighting an insurer with more resources than she had — needed tools that did not exist. So we built them.

What she needed was a way to keep evidence organized and encrypted. A way to write letters that demonstrated she knew her rights. A way to find support resources at 2 AM when the anxiety was worst. She needed 3mpwrApp, so 3mpwrApp exists.

The “3mpwr” in the name is intentional. Not the hollow empowerment that asks disabled people to simply try harder in an unjust system. Collective empowerment. Power through documentation, through community, through having tools that match the tools being used against you.

The Principles

  • Born from direct experience with the failure of disability support systems in Canada
  • Built in response to the systematic silencing of injured workers by insurers and employers
  • Designed by community members who were themselves navigating the exact systems the app addresses
  • The name “3mpwr” reflects collective power — empowerment through tools, technology, and solidarity
  • Community advisory process shapes every major feature decision to this day

In Action

  • The Evidence Locker exists because documentation is the primary tool injured workers lack
  • The Letter Generator exists because legal language is used as a deliberate barrier
  • Simple Mode exists because the community said directly: “I’m too sick to navigate this app on hard days”

Why It Matters

  • Tools built by the community look fundamentally different from tools built about it
  • Our origin story is a statement of accountability to the people we serve
  • Every feature is a response to a real, named barrier that real people told us they face
